-Intro
-Hello we are team five and we are a group made up of multi- disaplinaries students. We meet for the first time on friday the 24th October to work on the cascade project. These are our first thoughts when we were given the brief...
-sound bites.

-process
-so once we had discuss elements of the city we as individuals would like to change we started to think about what we could do as a group to make the city a happier place.
-to help us work well in the team we created a blog, this meant that we were able to be in contact with each other even when we were out of the studio and also it meant that our research was all in one place. We had a daily polaroid at the end of each day so that we could reflect the days events and bring us together with something a little fun at the end of the day. Here is a short film reflecting how we got to our end idea and the ways we worked together as a team....

-.....imagine a city under a glow of UV light, mapping the journeys from day to night.....
- ‘Manoeuvre’ is an event that literally maps the different paces of life within a busy, populated city to reveal the ghost of the day’s commuters.
The anonymity of many interwoven journeys become exposed through the use of Ultra-Violet light that is entirely transparent when in day light, and remarkably visible when in darkness.
This allows the transition of day to night to become magical, utopic and creates a spectacle that identifies how lives interact and play together within a large-scale community consisting of members that may not even know each other. Pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, tourists and
pigeons all become a part of the artwork that challenges how the masses perceive each
individual.
Ultra-Violet paint will be placed on all exits and entrances around Trafalgar Square on a large inkpad like material that when walked on, will transfer will be spread all over the surrounding areas depending on where commuters travel. Then when its gets dark temporary Ultra-Violet street lights will be switched on and the day’s events are presented in a colorful and engaging manner.
-Here is a video that captures the journeys at are made throughout london, showing how peoples connect and are merged together.

-The output
-The Ultra Violet paint is a non-toxic, water based acrylic and therefore its perfectly safe. It has a drying time of up to one hour and is transparent so doesnt show up unless under a Ultra Violet light. During the event we would have ink pad type mats around the entrances of Trafalgar Square, at the traffic lights and top and bottom of the stairs. These would then leave a light coating on the bottom of peoples shoes which would leave an invisiable trail behind them. During the event we would have to have an understanding with the council workers. The litter could be cleared away and the cleaners would have to continue as they would normally, as we want to create a true representation of the days journeys, but they wouldnt be able to wash or brush incase it would wipe the paint away.

-the conclusion
-The beauty of the idea is that there are many levels to understand the work, and there are many possibilities to expand the concept. We feel that if maneoUVre was a success in trafaglar square it could be used anywhere, it could get bigger to see how boroughs interact, different cities and it could even become global.

you are all the agreed team representatives for the cascade groups so below are details of the install and what is required, the bold text is relevant to you but it is good for you to understand the full picture of things: please communicate this to your teams and confirm to me that this is all fine - if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask!

schedule of install:

wednesday 12th 20:00- 23:00 ADRL(aa+chelsea) students and tutors to bring structural pieces, cyril and theo you will need to sign in at security to allow your students to come in and install

thursday 13th 09:00-23:00 chelsea students to come and set up the main space with signage - cyril again you will need to sign in to allow your student to get access

14:00 - 23:00 westminster students and jason bruges team to assemble intelligent version outside the delegate centre (dean this is a proposed time, it can change if you need)

14:00- 23:00 cascade students to come to assemble their wall space and bring film content which will need to be burnt onto DVD derek + amanda to sign in students?

18:00-19:00 technical run through

friday 14th 09:00-10:00 set-up

10:00-18:00 symposium

technology provided with proposed content:

1. main screen and projector with sound system - main presentations

2. 2 x sony plasma screens with DVD - chelsea citystates film + aa slide show i do not have headphones

3. 1 projector to hang from the ceiling onto the ADRL structure - this will be held in a cradle and projected straight down onto the structure as agreed - this will play the WP cascade project films and process slides

4. 1 projector running from a DVD - on a stand to project on the wall on the left as you come into the space - this will play the LCC documentary film of the whole process and project

each group will have an area allocated on a wall to put up any work that you want to show, amanda jenkins (camberwell foundation tutor) has all your artwork from the walls from P3, please contact her to retrieve your work.

we need you to provide all your images as a movie and also any other films on the thursday so we can make a dvd of all 6 groups work in progress and process, this will be projected on the structure which has been created by ADRL students (see floor plan attached). this will need to be done on thursday.

we also need you to send a small synopsis to rosie (cc;d here) of your proposal as the chelsea students are working on the signage

Really sorry but onedotzero have been really strict and now there will only be one projector with all the cascade projects being looped....has sophie not explained this?So your idea for the UV footsteps sounds great but there will be no specified space for that...but when you have your presentation during the day you could show it then?

We are setting up the exhibition this thursday so on the day all groups must bring their 5 A3 sheets of their work. You must arrive at the BFI at 10.30am..there is only one day to set up the whole exhibition. The details for formats etc, are in the attachments, (1 sheet is for the synopsis and the other four are anything you think is relevant to your work, ie sketches, models, images, text. Its very important you bring this work. We will then display it on the wall. If you have any questions just email me.

i love Ben's synopsis..nobody cld explain our project better ;-) Do you think it is worth to add that when the rain comes it washes off the 'past?' mayb not. many people where wondering what happens after...

Yesterday after presenting our proposal to another group of people i got an interesting feedback from an architect saying that an interactive element (which we r missing in response to Jason Bruges work) does not have to be immediate response to an input. It could be a delayed response(hours, days?)And also it wld b interesting if the output/response become input afterwards. he talked about creating a circle and about the end result not being lost after it happened. Not sure how we can use it..but i fouhd it interesting. i am just writing this to get our brains going again.
In the meantime here are sensors we cld mayb use (one or more of them): Touch and force sensors, pressure sensors, temperature sensors, accoustic (wind, voice?)sensors, infrared sensors, light and colours sensors, passive infrared sensors (just like those in th loos which turn light on when u walk in) Could the badges have a micro-chip in them?we don;t have to make anything, just propose it..my thinking hat is still on..

OK- What about temporary UV street lamps(would make them look cool!) that are triggered by motion laser sensors? When enough people walk when dark in the area, they turn on and replace the normal street lights for a short period of time- one or two minutes a time?

Hey hey guys,

Had an email from Helen Priestly(one of the girls doing the BFI space setup) requesting a 200 word synopsis and possible explanation that will go next to our area. With regards to the previous blog- yes we definently need a more professional video response, and am getting a good DV camera to do some stuff on. Am thinking a short experimental promo around the themes of 'connectivity', 'urban interaction' and 'colour'. I have done around 190 words for the synopsis- BELOW- but am not sure what to do about the interactive part that was mentioned. I think it would definately be a good idea. Perhaps have a motion sensor and a light sensor? When it gets past a certain light darkness, the motion sensor is switched on and when there is a certain weight reached(not too heavy), the street lamps are replaced with UV light? It would be advertised perhaps that there is a 'responsive' art piece in Trafalgar Square in the papers/websites/leaflets/badges etc? Perhaps a date on the badges when it first happens to start a teaser campaign?

And another thing is: our proposal is not interactive in any way..is there any way we cld make at least 'turnign the UV light on' interactive? perhabs a sensor detecting movement or something else which wld trigger the uv lights?

uv paint arrived today! that's the good news. Bad news is that it is smaller than we thought. imagine little jam-jars you get at a hotel for breakfast..well that's how small the pots with paint are. tiny!i assume we cld do around four-six footprints with 1 pot. We have 7 of them = u do the maths.
Mayb do small area?on a huge card board which we cld place in BFI exhibition space later??

Source UV lights from somewhere?- kate and I were thinking of trying to hire out the lights from our college or possibly LCC? We could also start to research how expensive it would be to hire a UV light for one day (over night as well so it MAY end up being3 days? Possibly?)

I don’t know how much you lot are looking forward to the sleepless nights that are inevitable in the run up to this presentation but I actually actually cant wait. I am not going to be in London this weekend and I don’t think kate is either and we DEFINITELY do need to meet up to get this presentation perfect. I think we may need to meet up quite a lot and I know this is not ideal s everyone has other commitments but I am really excited about this project and feel the opportunities offered by this dwarf the negatives?
I understand that it was impossible for us all to meet up to do the last presentation and I know a lot of you would like to be more actively involved in the reworking of it and that would be really great and make for a more successful presentation!

hello i hope you all had a good weekend i know a few of you had urgent college deadlines/ work to attend to (as did i but luckily my tutor is understanding and has allowed me and extension :D) but just to let you know that kate and i have literally spent ALLLLL weekend doing the presentation and at times the progress has been frustratingly slow! I think most of you have seen the little photo-still film now and have had positive feedback from you which is really nice so thankyou! also we have basically sorted out the slides for the powerpoint but obviously we havent got all the information in there yet but i think it should be fairly straight forward to just add it in tomorrow morning? it has been a massive learning curve as i dot really think i have used powerpoint before (apart from maybe in school about 6 years ago) so i really hope it is ok, we basically worked with what ben gave us already although i think it took us a slightly indecent amount of time to work out how to get the film in there so it wasnt pixellated but now its all good, i hope :). i am going to stop typing now as i feel i am losing direction slightly!

Several ideas- mon had an idea we thought we were going to do

Tues- looking for poss locations and imagery

got so many more ideas and they mutated and evolved inspired- back to p3 and brainstorms

Out of 3 main ones lucy clarified our ideas, we became more aware of the potential of our ideas… her positive attitude really got us motivated her talk was a catalyst in our project and really got us moving forward. Ben went to get paint and then we were testing the uv concept- staying late

She well got our creative juices flowing

Thursday – became more dynamic as a team we were making the most of our teams abilities. It seem to come naturally as we all focused on different tasks
We have a good direction
We were having fun and anticipating the results

Went to Trafalgar to collect imagery but we couldn’t get as much as we would have liked as there was an event being staged

Played with badge ideas and possible commercial ideas
Also started to think about how the event could be repeated and transferred to other locations and destinations potentially globally

• whittled down to three main ideas
• all had potential but after talking to external practitioners lucy collier in particular helped us clarify and resolve our ideas and identify which one had the most potential and mileage.

Hello, just thought i ought to say im really sorry i was a pain in the arse today. I emailed a materials company today as follows:

Good Afternoon, Having found your website, I am very impressed with what you have to offer. I am emailing you with regards to an art project I am involved with, as we need a specific material that will allow UV paint to be transferable from the product to a pedestrians foot simply and easily. We will be demonstrating how journeys can interweave and intersect that will convey a sense of community within a city space. Therefore, the piece of material will have to be discreet, unnoticeable to commuters and that will not dry out the UV paint, ideally- it will preserve the freshness and retain moisture. Perhaps a large, thin sponge mat(almost similar to an ink pad?). the UV paint will be invisible during the day but very prominent at night when the UV lamp gets switched on. Today was enlightening. I feel the progress we are all making is monumental as our belief in a core idea is thouroughly understood and acknowledged. I hope Friday will be equally as enjoyable as many things have to be done. The stop frame animation looks great- I hope we can fit in this with an equally impressive presentation in which im sure we can achieve. I beleive in this idea and after a few days of excitement and an extremely educational experience- I dont see why it would'nt be a success. After speaking to a few people after you guys left, this became apparent. ROLL ON FRIDAY!

Today i feel enthusiastic and excited! I think we have a direction and its a good one! also it was amazing fun to do the uv foot prints at the end! (sorry for those who missed out!) hope the results are good, and beryl's hand wasnt ruined for nothing!

Im thinking tomorrow is going to be a hard day, we all need to be focused!

Right....badge-it-tastic! after the fun of the uv me and steph went to toys'r'us to buy a badge it for the presentation/ example hand outs. We regret this alittle as it was a little bit of a mission! however i did burn off the unnecessary chocolate muffin i had earlier! Firstly we had to wait for the bus and due to it being rush hour they were all heaving, so we had to let one go. Then we foolishly got over excited at the sight of tesco and therefore got off the bus two stops too early. so after a visit to a 99p shop we found that it was 'a ten minute walk' (lies) felt like more! but eventually finding it we headed in. We were greeted by two women telling us we couldnt take our bags in. and due to the fact we had our laptops on us we weren't too sure about leaving them. But we risked it for the group! So we soon found badge-it! amazing! and some refills so we have enough supplies for 75 badges ( i think) with a variety of sizes including square! plus we invested in some uv pens (we think, as they are from a secret diary kit! ). Then we back tracked on our selves and went down a dodgy dark alley/road to get to staples to by some fluorescent paper for the badges.

After this we thought we would walk home......mistake. it took forever, we started walking down a street we thought we knew hoping that we would eventually end up at home! looking back i think this was rather stupid as we were definitely walking through some interesting parts of south london/ Peckham with laptops ( but more importantly badge-it!) anyways we got there in the end!

So now i am playing with making rubber stamps and steph is playing with the uv pens so we can come up with some ideas for tomorrow!

im going to leave that there! sorry for the rant but i thought it was important to document the events!

i found it really interesting how barely anyone was paying attention to what they were walking on, even when they had to physically step up onto something in order to get past they did not seem to notice. this gives us more freedom when it comes to our designs and how we are going to disguise our ink reservoirs- i think it was beryl who initially suggested using some sort of sponge that people could walk across, i was thinking that could really work in a sort of inking-up-a-stamp way. this could also somehow solve our problem of having to keep the UV solution from drying out ridiculously quickly.

Imagine having a different colour UV in a different borough of London. The traces of lives could really be told, and may end up looking quite magical. What do you guys think!?

We could have a real aura of mystery as each day could be a different area? or altogether? or not at all?! In response to Milos, is it possible to organize with the paint company, an agent that extends the drying period? otherwise the paint may become too dry too soon and may not capture the carnage!? I believe it dries within one hour which i don't feel will be enough. Lets test!

I feel happy with what we achieved today. Love the idea. Love the fact we kept it simple. Simple and effective always works. Mapping pilgrim's movement in the city always interests all architects, so am sure we will win 'those kind of people' over :-) The site for our project - Trafalgasr Sq - is well chosen too. I believe the connection between our project and the National Gallery is very strong too. I am sure all visitors of the gallery would love to create some art after seeing the amazing art and right after when they walk out . All this with no effort whatsoever. Brilliant. And imagine the show every night when different art piece is revealed!

Aw btw, I placed an order today, we paid nearly £10 for an extra special fast delivery, so lets hope it works. I also wrote them (Glowtec) an email asking if we cld come over to collect our order and after i sent it i relized they r actually based in Bury. I was hoping it is close to London, but the map says its near Manchester - anyone up 4 a trip 2morrow? :-) just kidding
I also asked if they wld consider sponsoring us / giving us free paint, so lets hope they'll agree. I offered we would mention their name at BFI - 1.0 Festival. fingers crossed

Hi, Ive decided to write a general overview of how i feel at this stage!

I hope we got the uv stuff sorted now, im up for paying now and then looking into things closer tomorrow incase we can pop out and get some to use tomorrow.

That aside im feeling good. I know that it possibly seems like we back tracked seeing as we going with the idea that we came up with last night but after talking to steph we feel that we had to go through that process to get to where we are now. if we didnt follow the ideas through then wouldnt have felt like we had seen them out. (if that makes sense!)

For me me the key words for today is simplicity. I feel that this theme ran through todays talks and then after speaking with lucy she confirmed it further.

As human beings we are pleased by simple things, we are human and not technological. and i think that in life its the interaction with other people that make us happy, being with our friends and family, and this kind of links in with our objective to connect people brighten there day. Im not saying technology doesnt help our lives but sometimes the simple things are more effective.

Sorry not meaning to babble, but thought it would be nice to get down what our feeling are.
