-Intro
-Hello we are team five and we are a group made up of multi- disaplinaries students. We meet for the first time on friday the 24th October to work on the cascade project. These are our first thoughts when we were given the brief...
-sound bites.
-process
-so once we had discuss elements of the city we as individuals would like to change we started to think about what we could do as a group to make the city a happier place.
-to help us work well in the team we created a blog, this meant that we were able to be in contact with each other even when we were out of the studio and also it meant that our research was all in one place. We had a daily polaroid at the end of each day so that we could reflect the days events and bring us together with something a little fun at the end of the day. Here is a short film reflecting how we got to our end idea and the ways we worked together as a team....

-.....imagine a city under a glow of UV light, mapping the journeys from day to night.....
- ‘Manoeuvre’ is an event that literally maps the different paces of life within a busy, populated city to reveal the ghost of the day’s commuters.
The anonymity of many interwoven journeys become exposed through the use of Ultra-Violet light that is entirely transparent when in day light, and remarkably visible when in darkness.
This allows the transition of day to night to become magical, utopic and creates a spectacle that identifies how lives interact and play together within a large-scale community consisting of members that may not even know each other. Pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, tourists and
pigeons all become a part of the artwork that challenges how the masses perceive each
individual.
Ultra-Violet paint will be placed on all exits and entrances around Trafalgar Square on a large inkpad like material that when walked on, will transfer will be spread all over the surrounding areas depending on where commuters travel. Then when its gets dark temporary Ultra-Violet street lights will be switched on and the day’s events are presented in a colorful and engaging manner.
-Here is a video that captures the journeys at are made throughout london, showing how peoples connect and are merged together.

-The Ultra Violet paint is a non-toxic, water based acrylic and therefore its perfectly safe. It has a drying time of up to one hour and is transparent so doesnt show up unless under a Ultra Violet light. During the event we would have ink pad type mats around the entrances of Trafalgar Square, at the traffic lights and top and bottom of the stairs. These would then leave a light coating on the bottom of peoples shoes which would leave an invisiable trail behind them. During the event we would have to have an understanding with the council workers. The litter could be cleared away and the cleaners would have to continue as they would normally, as we want to create a true representation of the days journeys, but they wouldnt be able to wash or brush incase it would wipe the paint away.
-the conclusion
-The beauty of the idea is that there are many levels to understand the work, and there are many possibilities to expand the concept. We feel that if maneoUVre was a success in trafaglar square it could be used anywhere, it could get bigger to see how boroughs interact, different cities and it could even become global.

hope you are well.
you are all the agreed team representatives for the cascade groups so below are details of the install and what is required, the bold text is relevant to you but it is good for you to understand the full picture of things: please communicate this to your teams and confirm to me that this is all fine - if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask!
schedule of install:
wednesday 12th 20:00- 23:00 ADRL(aa+chelsea) students and tutors to bring structural pieces, cyril and theo you will need to sign in at security to allow your students to come in and install
thursday 13th 09:00-23:00 chelsea students to come and set up the main space with signage - cyril again you will need to sign in to allow your student to get access
14:00 - 23:00 westminster students and jason bruges team to assemble intelligent version outside the delegate centre (dean this is a proposed time, it can change if you need)
14:00- 23:00 cascade students to come to assemble their wall space and bring film content which will need to be burnt onto DVD derek + amanda to sign in students?
18:00-19:00 technical run through
friday 14th 09:00-10:00 set-up
10:00-18:00 symposium
technology provided with proposed content:
1. main screen and projector with sound system - main presentations
2. 2 x sony plasma screens with DVD - chelsea citystates film + aa slide show i do not have headphones
3. 1 projector to hang from the ceiling onto the ADRL structure - this will be held in a cradle and projected straight down onto the structure as agreed - this will play the WP cascade project films and process slides
4. 1 projector running from a DVD - on a stand to project on the wall on the left as you come into the space - this will play the LCC documentary film of the whole process and project
each group will have an area allocated on a wall to put up any work that you want to show, amanda jenkins (camberwell foundation tutor) has all your artwork from the walls from P3, please contact her to retrieve your work.
we need you to provide all your images as a movie and also any other films on the thursday so we can make a dvd of all 6 groups work in progress and process, this will be projected on the structure which has been created by ADRL students (see floor plan attached). this will need to be done on thursday.
we also need you to send a small synopsis to rosie (cc;d here) of your proposal as the chelsea students are working on the signage

Really sorry but onedotzero have been really strict and now there will only be one projector with all the cascade projects being looped....has sophie not explained this?So your idea for the UV footsteps sounds great but there will be no specified space for that...but when you have your presentation during the day you could show it then?
We are setting up the exhibition this thursday so on the day all groups must bring their 5 A3 sheets of their work. You must arrive at the BFI at 10.30am..there is only one day to set up the whole exhibition. The details for formats etc, are in the attachments, (1 sheet is for the synopsis and the other four are anything you think is relevant to your work, ie sketches, models, images, text. Its very important you bring this work. We will then display it on the wall. If you have any questions just email me.

i love Ben's synopsis..nobody cld explain our project better ;-) Do you think it is worth to add that when the rain comes it washes off the 'past?' mayb not. many people where wondering what happens after...
Yesterday after presenting our proposal to another group of people i got an interesting feedback from an architect saying that an interactive element (which we r missing in response to Jason Bruges work) does not have to be immediate response to an input. It could be a delayed response(hours, days?)And also it wld b interesting if the output/response become input afterwards. he talked about creating a circle and about the end result not being lost after it happened. Not sure how we can use it..but i fouhd it interesting. i am just writing this to get our brains going again.
In the meantime here are sensors we cld mayb use (one or more of them): Touch and force sensors, pressure sensors, temperature sensors, accoustic (wind, voice?)sensors, infrared sensors, light and colours sensors, passive infrared sensors (just like those in th loos which turn light on when u walk in) Could the badges have a micro-chip in them?we don;t have to make anything, just propose it..my thinking hat is still on..

INTERACTION
OK- What about temporary UV street lamps(would make them look cool!) that are triggered by motion laser sensors? When enough people walk when dark in the area, they turn on and replace the normal street lights for a short period of time- one or two minutes a time?

Synopsis for BFI
Hey hey guys,
Had an email from Helen Priestly(one of the girls doing the BFI space setup) requesting a 200 word synopsis and possible explanation that will go next to our area. With regards to the previous blog- yes we definently need a more professional video response, and am getting a good DV camera to do some stuff on. Am thinking a short experimental promo around the themes of 'connectivity', 'urban interaction' and 'colour'. I have done around 190 words for the synopsis- BELOW- but am not sure what to do about the interactive part that was mentioned. I think it would definately be a good idea. Perhaps have a motion sensor and a light sensor? When it gets past a certain light darkness, the motion sensor is switched on and when there is a certain weight reached(not too heavy), the street lamps are replaced with UV light? It would be advertised perhaps that there is a 'responsive' art piece in Trafalgar Square in the papers/websites/leaflets/badges etc? Perhaps a date on the badges when it first happens to start a teaser campaign?

presentation
Today it was the 3rd time i had present our proposal..i keep showing them (others tutors, students, people from bussines...) our blog and you-tube movies..it gets embaracing..we need a proper profesional slideshow asap
And another thing is: our proposal is not interactive in any way..is there any way we cld make at least 'turnign the UV light on' interactive? perhabs a sensor detecting movement or something else which wld trigger the uv lights?
